  1. Brush Your Mouth Thoroughly

Yes, you read that right. It’s mouth, not teeth. You shouldn’t brush your teeth and leave out your tongue, gum and the roof of your mouth. Every part of your mouth needs cleaning. When you’re brushing, make sure the bristles of your toothbrush are at a 45⁰ angle near your gum line. The bristles should be in contact with the gum and the teeth. Move the toothbrush in an up and down, back and forth motion.  Once you’re done, do the same for the inner part of your gums and teeth. Now move to the roof of the mouth followed by the tongue. Doing this helps eliminate bacteria that causes bad breath. Avoid being too vigorous when brushing your mouth to avoid damaging your gums.

  1. Floss Often

Most times, brushing your teeth will only clean the surface of your teeth. The spaces in between your teeth are left untouched. For this reason, you should floss at least once every day to prevent the buildup of food residue and bacteria.

If you’re a sweet tooth, you should probably stop and reflect on how much damage the snacks and junk foods you’re eating are doing to your teeth. If you want to have a sparkling white set of teeth, you need to watch your diet. Stick to teeth friendly foods such as fruits, nuts, cheese, vegetables and chicken.

  1. Limit Alcohol and Soda Intake

Alcohol and soda contain phosphorous. When taken in copious amounts, phosphorous can deplete calcium in your body and lead to dental hygiene complications such as gum disease and tooth decay. As an alternative, drink plenty of water whenever you get the urge to drink alcohol or soda. If you must take alcohol or soda, then you should use a straw to avoid the beverage coming into contact with your teeth. This is the best way to whiten teeth.

  1. Quit Tobacco

Smoking cigarettes is out of the question when you want to whiten your teeth. Tobacco will not only discolor your teeth, it also makes you susceptible to periodontal complications like oral cancer. When you smoke, you tend to use sweets, coffee or tea to mask the smell of tobacco. These are all bad for your teeth.

  1. Get a Regular Dental Check Up

Make sure to see your dentist for a full oral checkup and teeth cleaning every now and then. Some dental problems can only be identified by a professional. The sooner a problem is spotted the easier it will be to solve.
