Step 1: Get the plunger ready

The most common method of unclogging your toilet is to use a plunger. We’re all familiar with how these work in principle. A top tip to get this method to work the best is to not buy a cheap plunger. You need the plunger to form a seal otherwise you will not be able to get it to do its job. You should test the plunger when you buy it to make sure that it forms the seal that you need. You don’t want to find out that your plunger does not fit your toilet at the moment you need it to most.

You should also make sure that you buy a plunger before you need it. The last thing that you want to be doing is running to the store to get a plunger before your guests come over.

Step 2:  Prepare the bathroom

If a plunger does not work, you will need to move onto another method. If are satisfied that you have performed the plunging correctly to no success we might be dealing with more of a serious blockage than we thought.

In this instance, before you move onto any of the other methods listed below you will need to get your bathroom ready. You may be dealing with not only a blockage but a toilet that is overflowing. This means that you will need to ensure that you protect the floor and lift anything off the floor that could be damaged by the contents of the toilet.

Step 3: Get chemical

If plunging didn’t work then you need to move onto something a little stronger. You can get some CLR or other unclogging product that will be able to reduce the size of the blockage to allow you to either revert to the plunger successfully or remove the blockage entirely.

It is important that you follow the directions on the bottle so that you are using the chemicals correctly and safely. One of the major things that you should be alert for is that you should never mix chemicals. Use one and one brand only during this process.

Step 4: A homegrown drain cleaner

By heating half a gallon of water you can add baking soda and vinegar to help dissolve any blockages you have in the toilet. You need a lot of water to do this so be mindful of the potential to overflow your toilet. Provided you have prepared the bathroom as we have instructed above you should be ready to go.

You should be ready for the baking soda and vinegar to interact and fizz. Don’t be alarmed, this is part of the process. It is this reaction that helps to dissolve the blockage. You may need to let this mixture sit overnight to do its thing.

Step 5: Bring out the big guns

If you have tried all of the methods above it may be time to try something new. Plumbing snakes area great invention provided that you use them correctly. A plumbing snake is essentially a flexible coil, wire, or plastic tool that you can use to move down the bends in the pipes to attack the blockage directly. Here’s how you do it. Insert one end of the snake into the drain. Push down, feeding the snake further into the drain until you feel an obstruction.

Twist and push the snake through the obstruction. This can be a tricky process and requires patience and a little bit of effort. You will be thrilled once you are successful with this. It is ideal if you wear gloves as you do this as the blockage in the toilet is probably unsanitary.
